YVR-OGG OAI Review

We just came back from a trip to Maui and wanted to provide some insight in our OAI experience, which we took round trip from YVR all in J. From a seating perspective we sat in 1A and 1C on the way to OGG which are considered exit rows. Yes you do get unlimited leg room if you are in 1C (Aisle) but if your on the window, once the door has been closed there is a rather large bulge from the door limiting your leg room.

1A Window seat after cabin door has been closed

Taken from 1C (Aisle) prior to cabin door being closed.

Aside from the issues with sitting in 1A, if you decide to board prior to the the rest of the passengers, you will literally have every passenger on the plane on the left hand side walk over your legs/lap to get to their seats. Not a very comfortable experience.

From a seat comfort perspective, i find the width to be very narrow and although the seats can recline we found that every seat is different in terms of how much they can recline, mainly due to either a bulk head limitation (behind you) or age of the seat. Flying back from OGG we sat in 3H (Aisle) and 3K (Window) and found that 3K can extend further than 3H making the red eye flight much more pleasant for my companion. We noticed that people seated in 3D & 3F couldn't recline much because of a partition behind them (there is this weird enclave of 2 seats where 4 D& F should be where cabin crew sat during takeoff and landing).

seating controls in J

From a leg room perspective in row 3, i had no issues and found it quite spacious.

IMO the seats to avoid would be 1A, 3D, 3F, and row 4 based on either limited leg room or inability to recline due to a partition or bulkhead immediately behind you.

Food was pretty standard, on both routes the options were cheese tortellini or some chicken dish. Drinks are standard AC fare along with mid flight snacks (Chips, chocolates etc). There was a mix of AC and OAI crew and a lead AC crew member made their way around to all J passengers explaining why they are on OAI flight and were extremely polite about it and tried to ensure each J passenger was satisfied as much as possible for cabin comfort. Don't bank on the IFE, although available the selection was very outdated, bring your own tablet for entertainment. Overall the soft product was pretty good but the hard product left a lot to be desired.

Hopefully this helps someone flying these in the near future.
