For context, I live a block away and commute by the hotel every day on my way walking to and from BART. I travel extensively throughout the US and while the area has challenges and may not be comfortable for everyone I don't find it that different to locations I've stayed at with Marriott properties in many other major US cities in terms of people on the street or the overall neighborhood situation. The hotel is located in a densely populated legacy neighborhood in a major city. It's a 15 min walk to Union Square, it is a 25 min walk to the Financial District or Moscone.
I agree with the person posting above that their after hours approach is not appropriate for the neighborhood (they should staff the entry area 24/7).
