It is recommended you get a card from your insurance company certifying your car insurance is valid in Canada or take a copy of your insurance policy with you. I have done both but 95% of the time I carry neither.

FWIW I have never heard of anyone from the USA being fined if they have the normal USA proof of insurance usually carried in the glove compartment or are in a rental car.
