I have recently booked (with cash) KCH-KUL in J but I decided to check the cost compared to an Avios redemption. Cash was the better option in this case, however I did notice that the taxes, fees and charges on the reward ticket were higher than I had expected!
From ITA:
Malaysia Service Tax (D8): £6.90
Malaysia Regulatory Charge Domestic And International (H8): £0.20
Malaysia Passenger Service And Security Charge (MY): £2.10
Carrier-imposed surcharge (YQ)£3.10
From BA.com:
Passenger Service Charge - Malaysia: GBP 2.10
D8SB: GBP 0.20
H8GO: GBP 0.20
D8AB: GBP 21.00
Carrier imposed charge: GBP 3.10
For reference, from my MH booking (in MYR which at time of posting is 1GBP=5.14MYR)
Taxes:
MYR 16.00 YQ
MYR 0.96 D8
MYR 11.00 MY
MYR 1.00 H8
MYR 34.50 D8
It is easy to see that what MH charged me and what ITA is showing match up (add the two D8 charges together) but I am rather confused as to where BA.com's £21 is coming from! I thought that this may be due to point of sale, but even changing the point of sale in ITA to London instead of default only gives the following:
Malaysia Service Tax (D8): £9.80
Malaysia Regulatory Charge Domestic And International (H8): £0.20
Malaysia Passenger Service And Security Charge (MY): £2.10
Carrier-imposed surcharge (YQ)£3.10
So yes, there is a £2.90 increase, not not quite the increase that BA is trying to charge!
