The workaround is to checkin on the phone or directly at united.com (without logging in to united.com). Very annoying.
Got the same thing today, but assumed it had something to do with the fact that I was trying to check in for a LH flight. Before you start telling me "Always check in with the operating carrier", I didn't have the LH confirmation number (and it wasn't showing in my reservation on ua.com), and the other day I did get a "click-through" from united.com directly to my reservation on lh.com. Was trying to see if that would work again.
