Back to the original question, I think it all boils down to competition. The US-Japan market basically only has three players (UA/NH JV, JL/AA JV, and DL), plus SQ on the LAX-NRT route. To other East Asian markets, you have competition from Chinese, Korean and Taiwanese carriers. To many Southeast Asian markets, you also have competition from European and Middle Eastern carriers.
