I have two friends who recently paid $400 USD each for UA E+ on TYO-SFO.
Granted, they read it as "$40" when they clicked yes, but AC is by no means the most expensive "extra legroom" option.
And $400 + $400 may still be significantly cheaper than whatever the PY fare is. If you need the extra space, you go for the cheapest option.
