And would AC really ticket me on United, with an overnight in LAX or SFO to stay on a day flight from HNL to YVR?
My experience with AC has been for a significant scheduled change that they initiate (ie. by hours as you describe) or a canceled flight they are open to nearly any option as long as it staying on their an AC coded or partner flight. After you do the change if you phone them back and say, I would like these specific flights instead, they would work on getting you on them. If they don't the try calling a different agent.
