You have quoted 16 sectors but this may be some AA restriction so ticket on CX and go for the 20 if you are on an AONEx.
You may not need to buy extra sectors in Australia. You could route in SIN to most of Australia (or even reverse to HKG if you need the points) and then go to SYD. In addition, you could route to/from AKL without doing SYD again if you wanted. SIN-AAA-AKL-SYD-JNB may be more efficient. Watch the availability of First on the SIN-AAA.
I have not got the mileage tables with me at the moment for the calculated distances.
Why AA across the Atlantic, are you an AA member? By the time that you do this you could also do CX and QF across the Atlantic, even if you could not take BA.
