I would suggest getting him to check with CZ how much it would charge to change it to a journey to LAS returning from LAX and then have the benefits of a through ticket - it doesn't look too expensive to do so based on fares listed and then he would have the 2 x32 KG allowance the whole way and be protected against misconnections
I was going to suggest that he try to cancel and rebook on KE because the ICN connection is far better than LAX, and there would be no baggage concerns at all. Can also return from LAX, SFO, SEA, etc if booking round trip.
