Hidden city was referring to buying open jaw to get a good price (NorthAmerica-japan-asia-japan-North America hub-different point in North America), getting off at the hub and skipping last leg. There's a threadall about this for China Open jaw in the mileage run department

The open-jaw deal is just a fuel dump, I think. The skipping the last leg is just the cherry on top, not the main deal.
