KLM does this on certain routes, i.e. NBO-AMS and JNB-AMS. Documents are scanned either at check-in (JNB) or prior to boarding at the gate (NBO), and a CD with the data is given to the crew. The object is to prevent pax from discarding their documents in order claim asylum upon arrival in the Netherlands, falsely claiming that they are from Darfur or so.
