I sometimes will book with an OTA vs directly if it is a flight originating outside the US and therefore not subject to the 24hr "cooling off" period during which the reservation can be cancelled free of charge. Some OTAs are explicit about when one has to cancel by, and are more generous than the airlines themselves.
