Yes, you are right - there are other airlines to pick from, but I like you, I prefer DL in order to earn SkyMiles and maintain my Medallion status. But why would I pay premium if I don't have to?

Or just travel light and carryon, which is what I usually do.
To travel light is not an option this time - I will be gone 7 weeks! :-)
