After much back and forth, becoming less pleasant by the minute, she called her GM at home (on Sunday) and confirmed that she could accept the $50 e-card. And she did.

I start to think it is best to register the e-card online and make a print out of your Marriott gift card account which would show the item. Then use the print out, together with the PIN info for the front desk agent to manually process it.
