I use LGW a lot and the photo is for domestic travellers only, if you a flying international, you are not photoed. In addition, this is a trial and not a legal requirement so you can deny, but don't try it!
As you can still travel under a false name quite legally, is there a real fuss? The passport check internationally is to ensure that you can enter the country at the other end, otherwise the airline may have to bring you back and get fined. The fine for bringing someone into the UK is around 2500 GBP so they may want a good look at your passport.
These are the rules AFAIK, the check in staff have not necessarily been told all of this. As for ringing up the EC and staying that you have just travelled under a false name in F for a SYD to LHR sector, could I have the points, well...
