While we have never stayed in anything other than a standard room there, quite honestly, the room could be rebranded as a Holiday Inn room. It’s location that allows it to be a PH.

I wish that I could get excited about Hyatt because I do believe their is value in their World of Hyatt program, but a property such as the PH NY just doesn’t do it for me.

BTW, my better half and I just had a debate about the two hotels. We have different opinions. Ha!

I've never stayed at the plaza, and I don't know what your standards are, but if you consider the standard room at the PHNY "nothing special" you must be staying at some very, very nice hotels.

From looking at the numbers, I can tell you that the standard room at the PHNY is much larger than at the Plaza. Of course room size is not everything (though I do prefer a larger room -- I'm of the opinion that a 450 square foot room is not big enough for that price point)

Personally, I thought that the room was definitely something special. It was the nicest "standard room" I've been in at any hotel. Of course I've been in nicer top-end suites, but as far as regular rooms go, it's fantastic. I really liked the soaking tub by the window (and really the whole bathroom)

Having said that, the Plaza seems to be readily available at a rate of $700 / night, which comes to $860 / night all-in. You can even get a rate that includes breakfast at that price. If you really can pay that $700 with 20% off gift cards your taxes are not going to change so you are going to pay $560 + $160 in taxes for $720 total. How you think that price compares to 30k pts depends on how many points you have and how many you burn. Points can be acquired at 1.7c each, but in very limited quantities, so I don't think that is a fair floor on the value for many people.

At this point we are very much quibbling about first-world problems. If you are happy to spend $720/night on a hotel room, then obviously you should stay at the one you like more! I think this is just a matter of opinion.
