Sure, there are lots of crappy Sheraton domestically yet there are also lots of nice international Sheraton. I see Sheraton and FS Marriott as comparable and direct competitors.

Sort of agree. Internationally, there are some nice Sheratons out there. In the US, I haven't stayed in one yet that is comparable to an average Marriott. Even when well maintained (Charlotte/Reston), the lounge is a step down from the average Marriott. But its clear that Marriott, like SPG before, is pushing Sheraton operators to get up to par or deflag.
