I think you have it switched.

DL elites can upgrade with a DL flight NUMBER on AM metal, AM elites can upgrade with an AM flight number on DL metal.

If your flight had been a continuous flight that you booked through AeroMexico (i.e. MEX-ATL-ORD), you should have had no problem, but since you said it was a DLXXX ticket, you were not eligible.
