Unlike Simon VGC purchase, points for WM VGC purchases are not automatically denied. However for Amex min spending reqt, I would never buy GC's. Amex has come back after a few months and clawed back points for MR earning cards. I havent heard any data points of Amex clawing back SPG/Marriott or Hilton points, but still I wouldnt take a chance.
