Be mindful that if your bags on trip 1 are checked through to BTR, though, they will arrive on the carousels in ATL meant for connecting pax.

If your flight arrives in Concourse F, no problem. But if they arrive in Concourse E, you'll be stuck with your checked bag in your possession but no clear path to an airport exit. There's another thread somewhere about how to exit from that point - IIRC it involves either convincing the airline to re-check your bag to the landside carousels or getting CBP/TSA to escort you back out to F.

Or you can see if at your origin they will short-check your bag to ATL so you can collect it as an arriving pax rather than connecting.
