My guess, in thinking about this, is that UA rescheduled everyone who was supposed to be on the BOM-EWR return for that given date to go BOM-HNL-EWR. I imagine HNL was chosen to avoid any potential visa/immigration issued if they landed at a non-U.S. location (e.g. NRT).

BOM-HNL is 8,023 miles according to GCM, which will make it the second-longest 77W route UA will have flown (after EWR-HKG). I do wonder if folks will get the extra routing credit - almost 13,000 PQM (without any multipliers) for the revised routing
