Best case for Bora Bora from California flight is 8 hours and a 1 hour connection. "Worse" case from East coast would be a 4ish hour flight to LAX/ SFO before flying on (possibly shorter if you did New York - Honolulu - Papeete). So 9-13 hours in the air and 2-3 flights.

I'd think that a best case for the Maldives would be a 14 hour flight from New York to Dubai, then a 5 hour flight to the Maldives and then a 1 hour(ish) unscheduled flight to the resort. From the West Coast that would be a 16 hour flight, then 5 hours to the Maldives and 1 hour to the resort. That's 20-22 hours in the air and a minimum of 3 flights....
