I would ask BA to refer the case to the oneworld liaison desk, they can get AA to release inventory.. And if it is a connection from a BA service then EC261 may still apply here, and there is the refund option potentially too. However if it has just happened then you need the Avios calculator to run over midnight GMT to show potential availability, it isn't always a good idea to move quickly here.

Are you on a reward booking for BWI-MIA? If so then yes you are beholden to the operating carrier's policy which is not to allow changes on to another flight unless there is reward availability. CX has a similar policy. You can ask BA to contact the oneworld liaison agents to ask if you can move regardless but the answer is likely to be no.
I sat on sorting this out a bit too long but managed to swap my hotel plans around earlier today to fly from DCA instead. AA have just agreed to open up a reward seat (in J too!) so I can fly out of DCA instead at a civilised time! Had a very good agent dealing with it at BAEC who called the OW desk who emailed the relevant team at AA.
