TBH, you don't need any form of ID. Last time I used an aa.com paper ticket, and I just poked that into the SS machine, and out came my boarding pass. I could, literally, have given it to anyone (well, anyone male!). I guess I could just as easily give someone my BAEC card to check in, but the machines reportedly tend to ask for the CC also (I always use CC).

Of course, if you print your boarding pass at home (security security! gasp!) you may well have to show photo ID four times between the check in desk and your seat

If you travel from an airport with mixed international/domestic departures (like LGW North), you don't need photo ID, but they will take a digital photo of you at security, which will flash up at the gate when your BP is scanned.
I'm going to make myself seem a bit silly here, but I don't really understand the requirement? They don't check photo ID at the entrance to security, but you need a passport at the gate for international, and frankly, no one seems to care domestically, so why the point? Also... I've never flow intl from EDI, but I've only ever seen the one security point. Presumably all CPH/CDG/EWR etc goes through the same way? No photo taking there...
