I agree. On my 2012 trip, I had to be in Hiroshima by noon after spending the first night at Shinagawa. It would have been handy to go all the way from Shinagawa to Hiroshima on one train (Nozomi), but riding the Hikari, I had to change at Shin-Osaka, which meant standing on the platform a few minutes. No big deal.
