Costs are from about £60-80 for taxi/car service or £20 per person on the bus - I have done both and its about an hour and a bit with minimal agro however can you not pay a little more and go to NYC from LHR to mitigate the transfer? There are many flights to all NYC airports from LHR of course.

If you are looking to drop the last leg the transfer works in your favour on the return.
I did LHR to JFK earlier this year but prices are very good from Oslo at the moment, I don’t mind the ‘hassle’ as I can visit my brother over there too. The price is very good as well - 168 euros return. I wouldn’t probably check any bags, last time the hand luggage allowance was perfectly fine and I managed to squeeze some shopping in as well
