I have done two returns Y class AMS - BKK - AMS in the last 8 months and was perfectly happy. (as far as one can be perfectly happy in Y class) I managed to sleep between 4 and 7 hours on all flights, I got decent food, and service was OK. I also did Europe - Asia returns recently on TG, LH, CX and SQ, and KL was no worse than those airlines.
Steve, I am sorry to say but you seem to have a personal problem with KL that is not related to the quality of their services.
