Certainly no harm in asking. That said, be aware that ground staff at CDG (for all airlines, not just UA) are not the most service-oriented of people - do not expect an especially pleasant reaction!
They'e usually pretty nice at the check-in counter, but not at the gate, even if it's the same people. Go figure.
