Huh, I might be mistaken then. In my experience I can't do the "check in" process in the UA app until the LH flight coupon is lifted, which certainly means I can't change seats on the UA flight. The UA app also doesn't have BPs for my UA flights, although you're right that the LH BP can be used to board. I don't think I have been waiting for an upgrade in this case.
