I expected not to buy any food for deer when I first entered Nara. The first deer I came across were a pack of thugs. Once the initial area was cleared, and I entered the forested areas, the type of deer encounters were a world away. Here they were shy, sweet natured and employed the “bowing” technique - not to get me to initially feed them, but as a way to keep me feeding them. Gently persuasive, and very effective.
Deer have very different behaviours and, as a human, you have a choice to reward or spurn them as you wish. I suspect the brutes at the public areas show deer “culture” at its worst and humans amplify those differences.

The seagulls at Mishima Bay no longer follow the boats. Their guana has been destroying the little islands and boats no longer supply Calbe shrimp snacks to the day trippers. Seemed to me be working.
You can still get those kind of snacks on the boats at Misaki. Sod the seagulls, when they are interested (because often they aren’t), it’s the Kites that come for them. Awesome!
