What's there to "get away with" and "risky"? Guys please, dropping a segment is totally irrelevant so don't make yourselves crazy thinking about irrelevant stuff like this.
Book whatever connection you like and then enjoy the flight. BA is a separate airline Cathay has zero authority over and neither will anyone care.
