Sorry to hear about your situation.

Unfortunately, the chances of getting Aeroplan to waive fees for this are between slim and none. This is a major reason why the travel insurance industry exists. If airlines refunded/waived fees every time someone had a medical issue (regardless of severity), there would be no need for travel insurance.

I hope you either purchased a trip specific policy, or booked utilizing one of the Aeroplan Visa credit cards that provides insurance on Aeroplan rewards (or have some other sort of insurance that can cover this), as insurance is likely the only way you'll get your money back.
