I'm not sure the extent to which this still exists, but in addition to "preferred" seats, IIRC there are still what is referred to as "priority" seats on AC. "Priority" seats are non-preferred but near the front of the airplane and are a bit of a throwback to the pre-"preferred" days. The Altitude website still references this. Priority seats are generally not shown as being available to people who aren't eligible to select.

Under "Priority Seat Selection"

The only difference in seat maps is Rows 4-6 which leads me to believe 1 pax is eligible for priority seating and the other is not. If one of you is eligible, you might have luck calling AC reservations to get a seat assignment together.
Thanks.

That makes sense. Didn't realize they blocked availability up front like that. I guess until check-in. They're both flex but I do have 35k. Our other flight is on a 787 that shows the first six or so rows of econ completely blocked. Hoping there will be enough PE or J availability to upgrade both of us on that one as a father's day surprise. YYZ-LAX. And yeah, the codeshare makes it a pain too (not together on the UA metal either) but I'm hoping to either fix it at online check in or get dad to use his impressive ability to get what he wants to get us put together by a gate agent/check-in staff.
