- Get Cathay to just keep the bag in HKG for the later pickup and avoid flying it HKG-TPE-HKG?
- Get them to fly the bag to TPE but then fly it back to HKG without me having to pick-up the bag and re check-it?

As SLGO has mentioned, the best way is to get the staff at XXX to have your bags checked to HKG. If you have enough time at HKG before your next flight to TPE, you can even exit immigration, collect your bags, put them in storage in T2, and go back in again. Of course that will entail a baggage storage fee. The best way is to just collect your bags from the CX baggage services counter after your turnaround from TPE.
Do note that some destinations will not let you collect your bags at HKG. I flew from LHR-HKG-BKK once, and I wanted to forgo my last leg (HKG-BKK) and so told the CX counter staff to have my bags end at HKG but he refused! I had an argument with him but nope, no can do.
