Travelling the day before to NBO or a day later from NBO is an option. Albeit with costs. May be cheap self funded insurance.
If the KQ flight /aircraft to Male the morning/afternoon has a problem you will know you will not get out on time. As a guess it will turn around and fly back to NBO (with you)
But no showing NBO- FCO could/would have large cost implications.

Worth phoning KQ, but may be hard to get a reliable reply.
