It will not get you protection for delayed flights. That would be up to the goodwill (or otherwise) of the airline.

Through checking of luggage on separate reservation is another matter (not related to protection)

How long between the scheduled arrival & scheduled departure?
Do you have a visa for Kenya?
Thanks. I am scheduled to arrive at 8 pm into NBO and depart at 11:50 pm. We don't have visas -- is one needed for airport connection only?
