You would have to know the details before you apply your interpretation. Perhaps the students took a charter bus to the airport which subsequently dropped them off and left. So we can agree they would go home eventually, but probably parents or friends would have to pick them up individually because they were stranded at the airport. It would be accurate and acceptable use of the word for the chaperones to call the parents and say, look you need to pick up your kids, our flight was canceled and we are stranded at the airport. You don't know if they had readily available transportation, and if they didn't they were indeed stranded. Arranging last minute transportation for a group that size isn't as simple as calling an uber.

You are simply arguing the degree in which they were stranded.

We do agree though, nice move on Delta's part, stranded or not.
