The use of "stranded" for travel usually indicates a lack of ability to leave somewhere. In this case, the kids and their teachers could have easily left to go back home. Not a classic "stranded" situation. They wouldn't have had to spend the night on the floor in the airport. They wouldn't have had to get hotels. They. would. have. returned. home.

And it's still a nice move on DL's part.
