There is no downside to having your husband call UA (he should make the call so that he can explain as it was his job). But, I would be very surprised if UA issued a refund. Slightly less surprised if UA permitted a cancellation with a change fee waiver. This will not get you a refund so you still are out the cash, but it would mean that you would have access to the $284 per ticket for a year in case there is a financial upturn for you.
If you do cancel, do it before departure. After departure, the tickets will have $0 value. Prior to departure, unless BE, you will have the $284 per ticket credit and will then pay $200 per ticket to use that credit. But, you will not pay anything until and unless you use the credit (within a year). Still no refund, but at least you have a shot.
In the event that there is a significant schedule change or if the flight is cancelled, you may then request a full refund to your credit card.
As others note, depending on how comprehensive your travel insurance is, this may trigger coverage, at least for your husband.
