OK thanks all - we'll give it a try at T-24. It's only an hour flight but it's the start of YYZ-JFK-ZRH-IST-SIN-SYD the remainder of which is in business so my OCD wishes the start of it to be in J Thanks for confirming. I did add the flight on delta.com - I see it now and it let me choose a seat but not upgrade.
