Uber is actually your best friend there. The Metro is decent (and quite hectic) and there are "women / children " station sections and cars, if you have safety concerns. Savvy traveler street smarts (i.e., nothing flashy, look like you know where you're going) will do you well. Do not take street taxis. The alternative to them (other than UBER) would be a "Sitio" taxi - these are taxi stand vehicles, and your hotel (and most hotels) should have them readily available.

Traffic can be shocking to a Manhattanite at times, so plan your timing accordingly.
