Some good suggestions here. I'd add a UK writer Patrick Gale, who writes very moving, detailed, domestic dramas. Very English, all repressed emotions and dysfunctional families. Particularly recommend "The Facts of Life" and "Rough Music".
And a more offbeat recommendation for any gay foodies out there, Nigel Slater is one of Britain's top food writers and his childhood autobiography "Toast" is a very satisfying read.
Oh and bigguy, Mark Haddon, writer of "Curious Incident..." isn't queer - he's married with a kid. Doesn't stop it being a good book though.
