Having the companion automatically added for priority boarding is actually a good thing as it enhances/speeds up the boarding process.
I know that there are people who are unhappy about the amount of people getting priority boarding already now and this just makes it worse. But the impact should be quite limited outside the vacation periods.
And while the current process works with the agents, it doesn't work with the automated gates.
