Well, you could 1) rent a car which costs a lot, get used to driving on the left, and pay 7 bucks a gallon for gas, or 2) you could take one of the trains which are fast and not too bad (virgin operates some too), or 3) just hop on any of the cheap and reliable European LCCs... ryanair.com and easyjet.com are the first two that come to mind, and if you leave out of London City or Luton or Stansted the fares are often as cheap as £10 per person each way plus taxes... that's cheap! And they're good fast flights.

On the transatlantic, you'll of course be on either a 747, a 777-200, an Airbus 330/340, or (if you're lucky) a Boeing 777-300 which has the new seating and new "concept" design. If you're in business class, the A332s have the new business class (and no first class) as well. I'm testing out they're new business class for myself in a couple weeks.

AF, like DL, likes to use regional jets for short-but-not-that-short flights within europe... many of them do have business class though (although their short haul product really is in a sorry state currently due to union disputes). The ER4 you are seeing is likely for your CDG-ABZ flight, which should only be about 75 minutes of actual flight time, if that.
