I've "arranged travel" at the last minute for someone not related to me before (in fact barely known to me). I flew a deceased friend's daughter who was panicking about getting back to her job in Anchorage after her dad's memorial service I had attended- she had no money, dad's cash was all stuck in probate. I had miles and, well, it made sense to step up, because someone needed to. It might not have been my job, but it was just my turn, I guess.
Of course, I called Alaska on the phone to arrange the ticket (I may have been MVPG at the time, but I'd have probably done it even if there was a phone fee), explained everything, put her on the phone with the rep after ensuring there was inventory (checked on my phone first). Pretty sure nobody minded that. Now if it had been nine seemingly random people in Indonesia flying JL to Tokyo in business class, and I did it all on the web after buying miles, and I had zero history as an Alaska elite, and was doing it out of Indonesia...
