It`s at the end of June on an Air China ticket (ZRH-PEK-SYD-PEK-ZRH).
Better to apply for new (second, parallel) passport. No need to reapply for Australian visa, you show passports this way:
ZRH check-in: old passport
ZRH immigration: any passport (but remember to use the same on the way home)
PEK transfer desk (airline, if no boarding pass): old passport
PEK fingerprint machine and then TWOV counter: new passport
PEK immigration to landside: new passport
PEK landside check-in (in case at the thransfer desk you get no boarding pass 3 days before departure): old passport (for AU visa check)
PEK immigration from landside: new passport
PEK gate and SYD immigration: old passport
