Are you looking to book with Avios or cash? If you are booking with cash the best fares are rarely available on the day of release. If booking with Avios then you are doing the right thing by booking as soon as seats are released.

BA can only price and sell fares 355 days in advance. I've never herd of a placeholder, the flight just isn't loaded into the system, so the agent can't book it.
