Marriott Australia - Deceptive and misleading 'total price' advertising

This is only a small thing to many, but it’s very much against the law in Australia, where I live. Marriott continue to advertise rates that are unobtainable, ie a prepaid rate of $99 for instance at the Four Points Brisbane. The only way to get that rate is to prepay by credit card, which incurs a surcharge, and qudos to Marriott to making this point at the page which shows available rates: “Please note-Credit card payments relating to Australian hotels incur a merchant service fee of 1.5 percent.”

So while Marriott continue on each page to advertise an unobtainable rate, at least during part of the process it shows notice about the compulsory surcharge, BUT it gets worse, if you then select a prepayable rate, it says : “no fees for using your credit card”!

The local laws are very clear, ie “If you display or advertise prices, always include the total price.

The total price:
  • must include all charges, taxes, duties, levies or fees”

I would of thought the local Marriott people would be aware of this and the risk they put Marriott at in terms of legal action and fines but apparently not!
