IIRC, there was a sheriff in Oakland (?) who refused to stand down on the issue. Seems to me someone (county?) had to pass a law specifically targeting his office and addressing his refusal to follow local law over federal law.

I think the real issue there was that his political grandstanding was a waste of resources much better applied elsewhere.
